Shaurya

I walk across the campus with Aarush beside me. The morning is still soft around us. Cool wind brushes past, carrying the scent of wet grass, and the sun hasn’t turned harsh yet. Students drift around in lazy groups, half awake, half alive, but my attention stays fixed on the man walking next to me.

Today is a test.

He agreed too quickly when I asked him to do something for Minish. That alone puts me on guard.

“You need to take her to the hospital,” Aarush says casually, shoving his hands into his pockets.

I don’t even look at him. “Don’t meddle or I tell Rudra everything.”

He exhales sharply beside me, irritated already. The sound settles something dark and satisfied inside me. I like pushing him. Like watching cracks appear beneath that calm face.

“Aren’t you curious to know?” he asks.

“That’s none of your business.”

We reach the gym a minute later. Music thumps faintly through the speakers while metal clinks in the background. Minish is near the cable machine, pulling the lat bar down to his chest with controlled movements, sweat darkening the back of his black T-shirt. He notices us immediately.

Aarush goes quiet the moment we step inside.

“What’s he doing here?” Minish asks, releasing the bar slowly before grabbing his water bottle.

“Give him the parcel. He’ll deliver it,” I say, keeping my hands inside my pockets.

Minish’s brows pull together. “You trust him?”

“I’m standing right here,” Aarush mutters with an eye roll. “And you can trust me.”

Minish looks at me instead of him. I give the slightest nod.

After a second, he walks toward the corner where his bag lies tossed near the bench. He unzips it, pulls out a thick envelope, then returns and hands it to Aarush.

“If Myra gets even a hint about this, I’m blaming you.”

“Got it.” Aarush takes the envelope easily. “Anything else?”

I shake my head.

“Okay then. I have a meeting I can’t cancel.”

He leaves without another word.

The gym door swings shut behind him, and Minish immediately turns toward me. “What the hell was that?”

“Relax.” I lean against the nearby equipment. “I just want to see how far he can go to get us on his side.”

“We are on Rudra’s side.” His voice hardens. “I won’t stab my friend in the back.”

I don’t respond.

I don’t need to.

The truth is messier than loyalty. I don’t care what games Minish wants to play, but Sanjana doesn’t like Rudra, and that changes things. Everything bends around her eventually.

“Don’t forget we aren’t just friends anymore,” Minish says, staring at me carefully now. “We’re brothers. Need me to remind you about the oath we took?”

“I know.” The words come out sharper than intended. “I just need that guy on a leash.”

“Maybe put Sanjana on one instead.”

A humorless laugh almost escapes me.

“Doesn’t work,” I mutter. “Every damn time it backfires on me.”

Minish shakes his head slowly, like he’s watching someone walk toward a cliff. “You need to control your girlfriend. If Abhimanyu finds out you’re working behind Rudra’s back, he’ll make an example out of you. And don’t forget the brotherhood stands with him.”

“Abhimanyu can go to hell.”

“He’s still the leader we chose.” Minish wipes sweat off his forehead with a towel. “And he already doesn’t trust you.”

“Funny considering he calls me whenever he needs dirty work done.”

“Because he knows you can do things without blinking.” Minish steps closer, lowering his voice. “You’re my best friend, so I’m saying this one last time. Rudra is our brother. Aarush isn’t.”

I nod once, though my mind is somewhere else entirely.

Minish returns to his workout while I walk out of the gym, the heavy bass fading behind me.

How the hell do I get Aarush out of Sanjana’s life?

There’s always someone hovering around her. Someone ready to pull her away from me the second I loosen my grip.

The tracker inside Sanjana came from Aarush.

When she slips beyond my control, somehow he still reaches her.

That thought sits ugly inside my chest.

I can’t remove him yet. Not completely. For now, I need him close enough to use. Whatever happens between him and Rudra later, I’ll choose a side when the time comes.

It’s not that I’m against Rudra.

I’m not.

But the man is reckless. Too impulsive. He charges into things without thinking. I spent an entire year watching Sanjana before I made my first move. Learning her routines. Her moods. The places she visited when she wanted silence. That’s how things should be done.

Rudra burns first and thinks later.

I reach the canteen and spot her instantly.

Sanjana Khanna.

My baby doll.

She’s sitting near the window with sunlight spilling across her hair, laughing softly at something on her phone. The second I walk in, her head lifts like she felt me coming before seeing me.

Then she smiles. And just like that, every ugly thought inside me loosens.

God, I love her. Not normally. Not safely.

I’m completely fucking crazy for her.

I reach her and pull her into my arms from behind, burying my face near her neck for a second. She melts against me instantly, soft and warm, her body fitting against mine like it belongs there. A quiet sigh leaves her lips, content and sleepy, and something inside me settles.

I can never get enough of her.

“Hey, baby.”

She tilts her head back slightly to look at me, her hair brushing my jaw. “Hey. Wow, you seem to be in a good mood.”

“I am.” My fingers tap lightly against her waist. “Let’s go out tonight.”

“Okay.” Her eyes brighten immediately. “Where?”

“Wherever you say.”

“Delhi. I want to meet Shri.”

I stare at her for a second before huffing out a laugh. She grins, entirely too pleased with herself.

“I’ll take you to Delhi,” I tell her, pinching her cheek lightly. “But not today. Choose something within a ten mile radius. Fine, twenty if you behave.”

She pretends to think hard. “Movie?”

“You got it.”

My gaze drops to the plate in front of her and my mood shifts instantly. I frown.

“What are you eating?”

Beside her, Myra sighs dramatically like she already knows where this conversation is going.

Sanjana wrinkles her nose. “I didn’t feel like eating paratha.”

“So you chose Maggi instead?”

She shrugs carelessly, twirling the fork once. “Relax. I only took one bite. If you don’t want me to then…”

Before she can finish, I take the bowl from her hands.

Her eyes narrow immediately. “Seriously?”

I ignore her and walk straight to the counter. Chintu looks up the moment he sees me approaching.

“Take this back,” I say, handing him the bowl. “And give me one grilled sandwich, one masala dosa, one veg roll, and two milkshakes.”

“Which flavor?”

I glance back at Sanjana. She’s watching me with annoyance written all over her face.

“One banana, one strawberry.”

Chintu nods and starts yelling the order towards the kitchen.

When I return to the table, Rudra is already there with Jhanvi. The second Sanjana notices him, her shoulders stiffen slightly. Small. Barely noticeable. But I catch it.

I slide into the seat beside her and drape an arm around her neck casually, pulling her a little closer.

“Hey, baby.”

“I’m hungry,” she complains, pouting now.

I smile despite myself.

The food arrives a minute later, and her eyes widen at the number of plates covering the table.

“What is all this?”

“Options.” I push the plates toward her. “Eat whatever you want. I’ll finish the rest.”

“We only have ten minutes before class.” She glances nervously toward the corridor. “I don’t want to miss the lecture.”

“Then eat in ten minutes,” I say simply. “Problem solved.”

Her nose scrunches adorably as she pushes the dosa away first. Then she picks up the banana milkshake, takes one cautious sniff, and immediately gags.

I freeze.

For one sharp second, every thought in my head stops.

Should I take her to a doctor?

She quickly reaches for the strawberry shake instead, takes a sip, and visibly relaxes. “This one’s good.”

I watch her for another second before leaning back slightly, though the unease stays lodged inside me.

She finally settles on the sandwich and starts eating while I finish everything else she rejects without complaint.

Across the table, I feel Rudra staring.

Not casually.

Watching.

Thinking.

Trying to connect pieces that I don’t want connected.

So I distract him before he gets too far.

“You know Minish gave Aarush a job,” I say, tearing a piece of dosa.

Rudra frowns instantly. “What job?”

“The envelope he had.”

His eyes immediately move toward Myra, but she’s too busy talking to Sanjana to notice the shift in conversation.

“I didn’t think Minish trusted Aarush.”

I shrug lightly, acting uninterested.

The bell rings through the corridor, and Sanjana jumps to her feet so quickly her chair nearly scrapes backward. I glance up at her but don’t comment on the panic.

Instead, I pick up the half finished milkshake and hand it to her.

“Finish it.”

She groans loudly. “I can’t.”

“You can.”

Her eyes narrow at me, but she knows arguing will take longer than obeying. Mumbling under her breath, she tilts her head back and gulps down the rest.

I hide my smile as I stand and wrap my arm around her neck again while we walk through the corridor.

“Which movie are you guys watching?” Myra asks excitedly, hurrying beside us. “Can we come too?”

“Sure,” I reply easily. “I’ll text Minish.”

She grins and immediately speeds ahead, but when Sanjana tries matching her pace, I tighten my hold slightly and slow her down.

“I don’t want to be late,” she complains.

“Relax, baby doll. We’ll reach in two minutes.”

We enter the classroom just as the professor looks up from his notes. The man stares at us like we robbed a bank on the way here.

Ignoring him completely, I guide Sanjana toward the last row and drop into the seat beside her.

The second she sits down, she pulls out her notebook and starts flipping pages seriously, already focused on the lecture. I let her study while my hand rests on her thigh beneath the desk. She doesn’t move it away.

My attention drifts across the room and lands on Deepti.

Good.

Looks like she understood the warning.

As if sensing me watching, she glances back for a brief second before quickly turning around again, shoulders stiffening.

I smile faintly.

I like seeing fear in her eyes.

Then I notice Tarun sitting in front of me, stealing glances at her every few seconds. But Deepti never once looks back at him.

Not once.

And somehow, that makes the smile on my face deepen.
