Nandini
Don’t go… don’t get involved… my mind screams at me. But my feet move on their own.
What if someone has fallen down, or crashed the car, or something? I need to check. I need to help.
But then… why is no one calling out for help? Just one yell of agony, that’s it. Where is the crazy screaming, calling , crying for help?
I stop at the entrance. The parking lot is large, with too many rows of cars lined up. Then I hear the muffled cries, and my heart nearly stops.
I can’t afford to get into trouble, but I can’t ignore the cry for help. As a professor, it’s my duty to check what the problem is. My shoes make a crunching noise as I walk over the dry leaves.
Then suddenly, the screams stop, and so do the cries.
I pause too. But I know the problem is still not over. There is still someone inside who might need my help. Gulping, I slowly walk inside the narrow space left by cars before coming to a clearing.
I frown as I find nothing. I look from left to right, but no one is there.
Was this some silly prank? But I don’t know anyone for them to do this to me.
I walk further inside, and stop dead as I see a pool of something dark. I walk closer, and color drains from my face. It’s blood… that’s definitely blood. I know it. I have seen my mother die in front of me, and the blood that was splattered on the road.
No… don’t go there, Nandini. Just don’t.
I once again look around, but the place still seems eerily empty. But someone was here. The screams, the cries, they weren’t in my head. They were real. And the blood also confirms my story.
Maybe they ran when they heard my footsteps.
What should I do now? I can go to the Dean’s office and get someone here to check this out. Or… I can get the security here. I saw two patrolling the grounds earlier.
Or maybe I can first confirm this isn’t some dark red oil. I don’t want to create a scene if there’s nothing. I need to be careful, my reputation is important.
I cannot make fake terror calls.
I walk around the cars, bending to check if someone is here, and need my help. But no one is there, and why it’s suddenly so quiet. I swallow my nervousness. There’s absolutely no one here. Shouldn’t the parking lot have a security or something, or at least a few students lingering by their cars.
But… there’s no one.
I walk back to the pool of blood and crouch, forcing myself to look closer. Something is mixed in the mess on the floor. An ID card. This has to be of the student whose the blood is.
Taking a deep breath and again looking from left to right and finding no one, I try to read the name on the card, squinting my eyes. But I can’t.
I need to pick the card. My fingers tremble as I grab it up, my nose wrinkling when the blood coats my fingertips. The eagle emblem catches my attention first. So this belongs to a student. The staff uses bronze eagle , while the students use golden, and this is golden.
I can’t make out the name. The card is covered with blood, the name hidden by the red stains.
I don’t want to touch it anymore, but curiosity wins. I open my bag with my clean hand, pull out my water bottle, and twist the cap open. Thank God for my habit to always carry a water bottle.
The water runs over the card, washing away the blood little by little.
I lean closer, and see D… I use my thumb to clean the card more and then the card disappears from my hand.
I gasp. My balance gives out, and my ass hits the floor hard. I twist my head to look at the intruder. I find two piercing deep brown eyes staring down at me.
