“Babes, get ready,” I declared to the lazy figure sprawled out on the bed as I continued to brush my hair. My hairbrush encountered resistance as it traversed the tangled terrain of my unruly locks.
Urgh, Tisha, who told you to snooze before doing your damn job? See, what happened now.
A slight wince escaped my lips as my brush tugged at the stubborn knots that had somehow made themselves at home overnight. I applied force and nearly fainted, seeing a chunk of hair entangled messily in the brush.
“Mark is in a committed relationship, apparently.”
The lazy figure had a mouth, good to know and she could use it, that was great. Exceptional actually!
I winced again but this one was for the poor soul. “Jack is going to flip out.” I said, feeling bad for my friend.
“Yep,” she confirmed with a casual nod, her fingers dancing over her phone screen. “And with that Instagram post and tag, he seems intent on letting the whole world know. The guy looks pretty good, whoever he is. I am thoroughly dissecting his Insta account now. This guy’s sturdy, certainly a far cry from our delicate Jack.”
“Didn’t he leave Jack because he didn’t want to come out openly?” I mused.
“People can be real jerks,” she stated.
“Aww, baby, not me. I am your sweetest and your best friend.”
My best friend, Aisha, flashed me a warm smile. “Men are assholes. How’s that?”
“That can be proved.”
“You might want to consider going bald. These knots aren’t coming out,” she offered.
“Thanks for being such an incredibly supportive friend.”
“Oh, silly, we are here to help.”
I shot a mock glare but rolled my eyes when she continued to browse through her phone. Shaking my head, I refocused on the tangled mess in my hair, determined to conquer it on my own.
Jack was a makeup artist and openly gay, and he was my other best friend. He shared a close bond with both Aisha and me, but he entrusted his deepest secrets to me alone. Aisha had a sharp tongue when she wanted to, and Jack possessed a delicate heart.
Unapologetically romantic, dear Jack fell in love on day one, wished to move in on day two, and found his heart broken on day three. His dates flipped out by his rapid romantic adventures, running down the hill away from him, but I always told him to wait for the one who would say, ‘Let’s not move in together; let’s get married instead.’ My heart sank, just thinking about how much he would suffer hearing about this. I made it a mental note to meet him tomorrow with ice cream and wine.
